Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder can be difficult since there is no blood test or medical test that can be used to detect it. Doctors must look at a child’s developmental history, as well as their ongoing behaviors, to better understand and diagnose whether they have ASD. Although it can be detected at an early age – around 18 months or so – it is usually given a final diagnosis at an older age. However, the earlier ASD is recognized and diagnosed, the earlier intervention and treatment can begin, which is better for the long-term outcome of the child. If you have noticed any of these symptoms in your child, be sure to speak to his or her doctor to decide whether or not your child needs to be checked by a developmental pediatrician. Early intervention in children with ASD can make a world of difference for their future lives.
